Like them or hate them, SUVs are here to stay. They are becoming increasingly popular, even though many of us long for other forms of vehicle.
There is no disputing how good SUVs can be, though, in rugged terrain. As winter slowly approaches, knowing which of them can handle the snow best is going to be necessary for many consumers.
This list will review 13 of the best SUVs from last year that are upcoming and can handle the thickest of snow. SUVs that can handle snow will be able to take on virtually anything, with hardly anything getting in their way.
2024 Kia Telluride
It would have been unthinkable several years ago to have Kia on a list of excellent SUVs in the snow. However, South Korean manufacturers continue to go from strength to strength, and the current Telluride is king of all terrains, including the snow.
Standard models have an excellent eight inches of ground clearance. But the X-Line and X-Line Pro have 8.4 inches of clearance, and all-wheel drive, of course, gives them as much grip as possible in snowy conditions.
2024 Land Rover Range Rover
While many might think of the Land Rover Range Rover as a luxury item, it is still an excellent vehicle for winter driving. Power comes from a variety of engines, ranging from the 3.0-liter V6 and the hybrid version to the powerful 4.4-liter V8 engines producing up to 530 horsepower.
Its off-roading credentials make it perfect for more challenging terrain. The eleven-inch ground clearance at its highest setting is very impressive. Land Rover’s years of producing off-roaders really come into their own with the current Range Rover.
2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
Chevrolet knows a thing or two about producing a good SUV. The Bow Tie has perfected its craft over the years, and the current Tahoe is an excellent example of this. While rear-wheel drive is the standard offering, all-wheel drive is available, and ground clearance begins at eight inches and rises to ten inches.
The full-size SUV easily fits seven people in the cabin, but that’s not all. Under the hood of the Tahoe is either the Duramax 3.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine or the exceptional 6.2-liter V8.
2024 Toyota Highlander Hybrid
Toyota is one of the class leaders in SUVs and regularly pushes the envelope of what it can do next. One of its best current offerings is the 2024 Highlander Hybrid, retailing at just $40,970, which seems like a pretty good deal for a hybrid SUV.
The Highlander’s economy is exemplary as a hybrid. Thanks to the 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine and the 2.5-liter L4HV hybrid 16-valve engine, it can achieve up to 36 MPG combined.
2025 Acura MDX
The 2025 Acura MDX proves that Honda’s luxury division can produce more than a large, comfortable SUV. It is as luxurious as you would imagine, with incredibly high-quality materials inside, spacious seating, and a pair of excellent powertrains: the 290 horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and the 355 horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 in the Type S.
Its all-wheel-drive system is one of the best on the market, ensuring the MDX can handle anything you throw at it. As you plow through the snow, you will be not only super relaxed but also look cool doing it in such an elegant beast.
2024 Rolls-Royce Cullinan
At first glance, you might think the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is just a gimmick—an attempt by the British manufacturer to turn its luxury sedans and saloons into a giant, brash leviathan of an SUV. While they have certainly done that, they’ve also made one of the best luxury off-roaders currently on sale.
Under the hood of the Cullinan is a monster 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine—the same one that we can find in the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Yet the power now goes to all four wheels, and the Cullinan can handle basically any terrain, including snow, with ease.
2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
Even though plenty of people would prefer Porsche not to make an SUV, the Cayenne is one of its best-selling products. It redefined the SUV market when it launched in 2022 and quickly became Porsche’s best-seller. It is still on sale in 2024.
The Cayenne Turbo adds to the car’s capabilities. It has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood and a new lighter transmission. The Cayenne Turbo is a fast and practical SUV that can handle nearly anything thrown at it off-road.
2024 BMW X7
BMW knows a thing or two about off-roaders. It showed us that the original X5 and its range have expanded massively over the years. The X7 is one SUV that follows in the footsteps of the X5, with its 40d diesel engine producing 347 horsepower under the hood.
Its 0-62 mph time of just 5.9 seconds makes it faster at accelerating than rivals the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450d and Range Rover D350. BMW’s excellent xDrive four-wheel drive system ensures it can handle anything, yet thanks to its air suspension, it will do so with great comfort.
2024 Volkswagen T-Roc
Some might find the Volkswagen T-Roc a bit dull. There are certainly more exciting SUVs currently for sale. But the T-Roc does everything that it says on the tin, and it is one of the best compact SUVs currently on the market.
The T-Roc has either a 1.0-liter or 2.0-liter engine, the latter being better for terrain involving mud, snow, and ice. The 4Motion four-wheel drive system is excellent, ensuring that even the slipperiest of conditions do not match the T-Roc. Plus, it comes with plenty of mod-cons, including a 10.25-inch digital display for the driver.
2024 GMC Yukon
GMC is another American manufacturer under the General Motors umbrella that knows a thing about big SUVs. The Yukon and Yukon XL are two of the giant SUVs currently on sale in the United States, and they are some of the most expensive, with prices starting at $58,200.
You do get a lot for your money, however, such as the 5.3-liter V8 engine and a ten-speed automatic transmission. Plus, there is virtually nothing the Yukon can’t handle when it comes to off-road driving.
2024 Ford Bronco
If there is one SUV that should have off-road driving at its heart, it is the Ford Bronco. The Blue Oval launched the new Brono to much fanfare in 2020, and it’s still one of the most highly regarded SUVs currently on sale, with a starting price of $39,630 at the time of writing.
The base Bronco has a 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four engine that produces 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. Ford also offers the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine in some models, while the Bronco Raptor has the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6.
2025 Volvo XC40 Hybrid
Volvo produces some of the most stylish SUVs on the market, and the 2025 XC40 Hybrid is no exception. Starting at $40,650, the XC40 Hybrid makes us of a B5 powertrain producing 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is solid at 26 MPG combined, but the XC40 is more than just a pretty face.
The hybrid Volvo easily handles off-road terrain, partially thanks to its excellent 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Front-wheel drive comes as standard, but for a more secure experience in ice and snow, it is best to opt for the all-wheel drive model.
2024 Lamborghini Urus
Lamborghini’s creation of an SUV might not appeal to everyone. But the Raging Bull has done it to perfection, even if its Urus SUV is one of the most brash and bombastic vehicles currently for sale.
The Urus is incredible, with its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine producing 641 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque in the standard model. Lamborghini clearly loves a driving mode, as the Urus has six available: Strada, Sport, Corsa, Neve (Snow), and the optional Sabbia (Sand) and Terra (OffRoad).
